The summer races may be over, but the running season is far from finished. On Saturday, October 31, Åland Marathon will take place in Mariehamn for the ninth year in a row – and honestly, it’s hard to find a better way to wrap up the running year.
An entire city becomes your running course
Mariehamn turns into one big race-day celebration. The course runs straight through the city, spectators line the route, and the autumn leaves make everything look especially beautiful at this time of year.
You choose your own challenge: the marathon (42.2 km), half marathon (21.1 km), or 10K – with something for most levels of ambition. And you’ll be in good company: Swedish runners are already the second-largest nationality represented, after the Ålanders themselves.
The Course
Åland Marathon takes place in central Mariehamn, following the same popular course as previous years – an urban and relatively flat route that takes you past the city’s harbour areas and central districts. This makes it a fast and accessible course whether you’re aiming for a personal best or simply want to enjoy the atmosphere. It also means you’re never far from spectators and encouragement along the way.

An easy race weekend
This might be one of the best things about Åland Marathon – getting there is part of the experience. Take the ferry from Grisslehamn with Eckerö Linjen, which takes around two hours, or travel from Kapellskär, and you’ll be there before you know it. No flights, no hassle – just pack your running shoes and a change of clothes for the weekend.
It’s perfect for a short, relaxing autumn getaway, especially together with your running friends.
Don’t wait too long
Prices increase on September 28, so it pays to make up your mind early. Registration closes on October 25.
