Kanonloppet – Åland's autumn classic is about to celebrate its 59th edition

While many people are already looking ahead to next summer's races, one of Åland's most beloved running traditions takes place every autumn, right in the middle of golden forests and open meadows.

While many people are already looking ahead to next summer's races, one of Åland's most beloved running traditions takes place every autumn, right in the middle of golden forests and open meadows. On Saturday, October 10, 2026, Kanonloppet, Ålandsmarschen and Julleloppet will be held for the 59th and 30th time respectively – an event that brings together everyone from elite runners to entire families on the same day.

For Swedish runners, Kanonloppet is a hidden gem. The course, the atmosphere, and the gently rolling landscape make it the perfect first introduction to Åland as a running destination – especially for anyone who feels that Åland Marathon later in October sounds like too big a first step.

The course and distances

Kanonloppet's main distance is 22.5 km, starting at 10:00 am at Markusböle in Finström, with the finish at Wiklöf Holding Arena in Mariehamn. The course runs along roads as well as meadow and forest trails, and is relatively flat but still challenging enough to attract competitive runners too. Those who prefer a shorter distance can choose 15 km or 7.5 km, while Ålandsmarschen (22.5 km, any pace, poles allowed) suits those who'd rather enjoy a scenic autumn walk. For children and families there's the Stora and Lilla Julleloppet, and teams can take part in the Kanonlopp Relay.

A genuine autumn experience

Kanonloppet is organized by IF Åland and is deeply rooted in Åland's local sports community – you can feel it everywhere, from the water stations along the course to the atmosphere at the finish area, complete with showers and post-race facilities on site. The race also has an environmental profile: participants can choose whether or not they want a medal, to reduce the number of unused medals.

Combine it with a short trip to Åland

October is a wonderful time to experience Åland in its autumn colors, with shorter distances and fewer crowds than during the summer season. A ferry from Grisslehamn (Eckerölinjen, about two hours) or from Kapellskär (Finnlines, via Långnäs) makes it easy to book a weekend trip from Sweden – with a trail race, a Åland march, or a family-friendly Julleloppet as the highlight of the trip.
